A team of Australian scientists has developed a powerful microscope using the laws of quantum mechanics to probe the inner workings of living cells.

The team, a collaboration between The University of Queensland and the Australian National University, believe their microscope could lead to a better understanding of the basic components of life and eventually allow quantum mechanics to be probed at a macroscopic level.

Breastfeeding benefits for mum

See on Scoop.it - Health Studies Updates

Women who breastfed their babies have reduced rates of ovarian cancer, researchers have found.

Increased ovulation heightens the risk of cell mutation which can cause ovarian cancer. As breastfeeding often delays ovulation, we were able to effectively demonstrate that breastfeeding for 20 months would decrease the risk of ovarian cancer by 50 per cent, and that the 20 months of breastfeeding could be spread over a number of children and still have the same effect.

“The results of our study would recommend that mothers breastfeed for 12 months to gain substantial effect – and longer if they wish.”

Tornadoes in Australia? More common than you think

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

Australians experience tornadoes, but they are not as frequent as in the United States.

There is a long-standing myth that Australia doesn’t get tornadoes. This simply isn’t true. Just ask residents of Burnett Heads and Bargara, on Queensland’s southeast coast, or the Melburnians who were affected by tornadoes on Christmas Day, 2011.

While we may not experience tornadoes with the same frequency or ferocity as in the United States – the most tornado-prone country in the world – they have been documented in Australia as far back as 1834.

Curiosity rover completes 1st drill into Mars rock

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

The Curiosity rover’s first rock drilling on Mars was a success. It will take several days for the rover to transfer the rock sample to its instruments for analysis.

Using the drill at the end of its 7-foot-long robotic arm, Curiosity on Friday chipped away at a flat, veined rock bearing numerous signs of past water flow. After nearly seven minutes of pounding, the result was a drill hole 2½-inches deep. Images beamed back to Earth overnight showed a fresh borehole next to a shallower test hole Curiosity had made earlier.

Google's Ads May Show Racial Bias, Study Says

One Harvard professor says some of Google’s ads discriminate, linking “racially associated” names to a possible criminal background.

One study by a Harvard professor says some of Google’s ads discriminate, linking “racially associated” names to a possible criminal background. Government and technology professor Latanya Sweeney searched 2,184 full names on Google and Reuters.com, which uses Google AdWords advertisements. She found that “black identifying” names were more likely to show ads suggesting arrest, as compared to “white identifying” names.

Names often given to black babies, like DeShawn, Darnell and Jermaine, suggested criminal ads in 81 to 86% of searches on one site, and up to 95% on the other. Names like Geoffrey, Jill and Emma, typically assigned to white babies, resulted in these types of ads 23 to 29% of the time on one site and 0 to 60% on the other, Sweeney’s study says.

The LED Desk Lamp of the Future Has Arrived

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

Plenty of LED desk lamps are either in the prototype stage or available for sale, but this one is a high-quality, versatile product at a fair price.

What’s so great about LEDs, anyway? Their most attractive attribute: energy savings. This 11-Watt LED desk lamp can give you as much light as a 75-Watt incandescent light bulb. That lets you illuminate your desk or nightstand for about 1/7th the energy you’re probably using now. And since the 27 LEDs in this lamp each last more than 40,000 hours, it’s likely you won’t ever need to change them.

Wind power could generate all the world's electricity needs without large atmospheric disturbances

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

There is enough energy for people to reap from the wind to meet all of the world’s power demands without radically altering the planet’s climate, according to two independent teams of scientists.

Wind power is often touted as environmentally friendly, generating no pollutants. It is an increasingly popular source of renewable energy, with the United States aiming to produce 20 percent of its electricity by wind power by 2030. Still, there have been questions as to how much energy wind power can supply the world, and how green it actually is, given how it pulls energy from the atmosphere.

To learn more, climate scientist Katherine Marvel at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in Calif., and her colleagues developed a global climate model that analyzed how wind turbines would drag on the atmosphere to harvest energy from winds at the planet’s surface and higher altitudes. Historically, people have built wind turbines on the ground and in the ocean, but research suggests kite-borne turbines could generate more power from steadier, faster high-altitude winds.

Adding wind turbines of any kind slows winds, and Marvel and her colleagues found that adding more than a certain amount of turbines would no longer generate more electricity. Still, their simulations suggest that at least 400 terawatts — or 400 trillion watts of power — could be generated from surface winds, and more than 1,800 terawatts could be extracted from winds throughout the atmosphere. In comparison, people globally currently use about 18 terawatts of power.

Simulating a century’s worth of amped-up wind-energy production suggests that harvesting maximum power from these winds would have dramatic long-term effects on the climate, triggering major shifts in atmospheric circulation.

New tuberculosis vaccine doesn't protect infants

See on Scoop.it - Health Studies Updates

The world’s most advanced tuberculosis vaccine failed to protect babies against the infectious disease, according to a new study in South Africa.

The vaccine, MVA85A, was designed to improve protection from the only existing tuberculosis vaccine, BCG, which is routinely given to newborns. Though the new vaccine appeared safe, scientists found no proof it prevented tuberculosis, an airborne disease that kills more than 1 million people worldwide every year. Previous tests of the vaccine in adults had been promising and researchers said the trial provided useful data to inform future studies. There are a dozen other TB vaccines currently being tested. Some health officials were discouraged by the results. “It’s pretty disappointing,” said Dr. Jennifer Cohn, a medical coordinator at Doctors Without Borders, who was not part of the study. “Infants are at really high risk of TB but this doesn’t seem to offer them any protection.”
