Social Isolation, Not Just Feeling Lonely, May Shorten Lives

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Update

Feeling lonely seems to go hand in hand with being isolated, but there’s a difference, according to a growing body of research.

It’s no secret that people who are socially isolated tend to be at greater risk of health issues, from mood disorders like depression to stress-related chronic conditions like heart disease. But what is really responsible for these negative outcomes — the emotional toll of feeling alone or the physical and social lack of contact with others?

HealthKeep Social Network Catalogues Your Medical Records

See on Scoop.it - Health Studies Updates

Keeping track of your medical records can get complicated. HealthKeep, a health-based social network, is looking to help people organize their patient history with a timeline of symptoms, medications and conditions.

Social media isn’t always the best place for sharing health concerns due to privacy issues, but HealthKeep’s users join anonymously so no identities are revealed. The site serves as a comprehensive snapshot of your health record, which is compiled with information you choose to post.

Similar to Facebook or Twitter, the site operates with feeds. If you wake up with a cough, you can look up the symptom on HealthKeep’s database to see what other users are experiencing. Those who take a particular medicine can filter feeds to read more on people’s shared side effects or new developments.

Electric cars back into the shadows at Geneva car show

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

Electric vehicles were not completely absent from the showrooms as the 83rd edition of the Geneva show kicked off, but no new models were unveiled and car company executives on site for the media days on Tuesday and Wednesday barely mentioned them. “Public confidence (in electric) has really fallen since its peak at the Paris show in 2010, when we only talked electric,” BIPE analyst Clement Dupont-Roc told AFP. Back then, French carmaker Renault, which leads the electric market, opened the order books for its first electric models and chief executive Carlos Ghosn said he expected the cars to represent 10 percent of the market by 2020. Renault’s compatriot PSA also plunged into the space, as did Japan’s Nissan with its Leaf. But as things stand today, sales have fallen far short of expectations.

Soaking up CO₂ emissions

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

CSIRO scientists have created a ‘solar sponge’ that captures and then releases carbon dioxide using the power of natural sunlight – as published in the scientific journal Angewandte Chemie.

The breakthrough presents a new way to recycle CO2 emissions using renewable energy. The ‘sponge’ which is made from a new smart material called a MOF (metal organic framework) adsorbs carbon dioxide, but when exposed to sunlight, instantaneously releases it.

Known as dynamic photo-switching, this capture-and-release method is extremely energy efficient and only requires UV light to trigger the release of CO2 after it has been captured from the mixture of exhaust gases.

On the heels of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer decision to bar employees working from home, a new study suggests nearly half of U.S. workers would like their job less if that perk was taken away from them.

In a national survey conducted among 500 Americans by SurveyMonkey, about 46% of respondents said they wouldn’t be as satisfied with their work if they were required to come into the office every day. Not to mention, about 6% said they would even quit.

Micro 3D Printer Creates Tiny Structures in Seconds

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

While 3D printing of toys, iPhone covers and jewelry continues to grab headlines, much of 3D printing’s impact could be at a much smaller scale. Micrometer-scale printing has shown promise for making medical and electronic devices.

Thiel says it should be possible to speed up his company’s microprinting technique even more in the future. Nanoscribe plans to start selling its machine in the second half of this year.

Printing microstructures with features a few hundred nanometers in size could be useful for making heart stents, microneedles for painless shots, gecko adhesives, parts for microfluidics chips, and scaffolds for growing cells and tissue. Another important application could be in the electronics industry, where patterning nanoscale features on chips currently involves slow, expensive techniques. 3D printing would quickly and cheaply yield polymer templates that could be used to make metallic structures.
