Why Do Americans Accept Wealth Inequality?

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Update

The belief in individual choice affects beliefs about wealth inequality…

It is clear that many Americans who are not in wealthiest 20% support policies that maintain the inequality in the distribution of wealth. Over the past fifteen years, tax rates have been cut across the board and attempts to increase tax rates on the wealthiest 1 to 2% of Americans have been blocked. The politicians who have blocked these tax increases have been re-elected. Clearly, many people are voting for these candidates, suggesting that there is broad support for the current inequality in wealth.

Why is that?

Diagnosis Promising For mHealth

See on Scoop.it - Health Studies Updates

mHealth is an emerging trend in technology. It stands for ‘mobile healthcare’ and means utilizing smartphones and medical mobile devices to help diagnose and monitor health conditions.

There has been a tremendous amount of activity in mHealth consumer apps. MobiHealthNews did a detailed study earlier this year and discovered more than 13,600 iPhone health and fitness apps in the App Store. However, many of these apps are unsatisfactory because they require too much manual input of data. Consumers tire quickly of these apps and lose motivation to update them.

Human Thought Can Control This Robot

The Virtual Embodiment and Robotic Re-embodiment project created a robot controlled by human thought, using magnetic resonance imaging.

Researchers use functional magnetic resonance imaging to scan the brain of a student as he imagined each individual limb. Scientists mapped out his brain wave patterns, and translated them into commands to make the robot move. The student was then able to control the robot’s movement entirely by thinking about moving.

In the Age of Anxiety, are we all mentally ill?

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Update

NEW YORK (Reuters) - “When Cynthia Craig was diagnosed with postpartum depression eight years ago, she told her family doctor she felt anxious about motherhood.”

Like an increasing number of people, she was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. But was it a reasonable diagnosis in her case, or indeed, in so many other cases?

Some psychiatrists say the increase in the prevalence of anxiety from about 4 percent to 50 percent is the result of psychiatrists and others “getting better at diagnosing anxiety.”

Critics, including other leading psychiatrists, disagree. They say the apparent explosion in anxiety shows there is something seriously and dangerously wrong with the DSM. Its next edition, due in May, would lower the threshold for identifying anxiety.

Gloves That Translate Sign Language Into Speech

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

There is no dearth of impressive student projects here at the finals of Microsoft’s Imagine Cup in Sydney, but one of the six finalists that caught my attention was a project called EnableTalk by the Ukrainian team QuadSquad.

Using gloves fitted with flex sensors, touch sensors, gyroscopes and accelerometers (as well as some solar cells to increase battery life) the EnableTalk team has built a system that can translate sign language into text and then into spoken words using a text-to-speech engine. The whole system then connects to a smartphone over Bluetooth.
