Bing Attacks Google With New 'Scroogled' Campaign

See on Scoop.it - Business Updates

Microsoft’s Bing search engine is taking its battle against Google to the next level with a new campaign called “Don’t Get Scroogled.”

The company launched a Scroogled website on Wednesday which attacks what Bing refers to as Google’s “unfair ‘pay-to-rank’ shopping practices.” This apparently refers to Google’s decision earlier this year to require merchants to pay in order to have their products come up in the results on Google Shopping. Previously, both free and paid listings were featured in Google Shopping results.

The study of 963 teens aged 14 and 15 in Norwegian schools found symptoms of the disorder in about 33 percent of the students who said they were victims of bullying — though it did not determine that these students were diagnosed with full-blown PTSD.

The evolution of human intellect: Human-specific regulation of neuronal genes

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Update

A new study published November 20 in the open-access journal PLOS Biology has identified hundreds of small regions of the genome that appear to be uniquely regulated in human neurons. These regulatory differences distinguish us from other primates, including monkeys and apes, and as neurons are at the core of our unique cognitive abilities, these features may ultimately hold the key to our intellectual prowess (and also to our potential vulnerability to a wide range of ‘human-specific’ diseases from autism to Alzheimer’s).

New rule on vaccine to help fight meningitis in remotest Africa

See on Scoop.it - Health Studies Updates

A cheap meningitis vaccine designed to treat a type of the disease common in Africa was ruled safe to use after several days without refrigeration on Wednesday, allowing health workers to get it to people in more remote parts.

Epidemics of meningitis A occur every seven to 14 years in Africa’s “meningitis belt”, a band of 26 countries stretching from Senegal to Ethiopia, and are particularly devastating to children and young adults.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) ruling, that vaccine MenAfriVac is safe to use for up to four days at up to 40 degrees Celsius, will save money spent on expensive “cold chain” systems in the final miles of delivery, said Orin Levine, director of vaccine delivery at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which helped fund the vaccine’s development.

Assistive Tech for Seniors at Home

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

Technology to help seniors age in place has gone far beyond grab bars and fall-alert buttons worn around the neck. Today, there’s a host of sophisticated products on the market, from medication dispensers that can report to a family member when their loved one forgets to take a pill to shoes embedded with GPS trackers to find cognitively impaired wanderers.

The best choices for seniors who want to stay at home depend on their medical condition, budget and personal preferences, says Marnie Renda, an occupational therapist and certified aging-in-place specialist in Cincinnati. The goal should be to make the technology fit the lifestyle, not the other way around.
