Eating Fish, but Not Supplements, Cuts Stroke Risk

See on Scoop.it - Health Studies Updates

Eating fish — and the more the better — appears to be associated with a small but significant decrease in the risk of cerebrovascular events, a meta-analysis showed.
“The beneficial effect of fish intake on cerebrovascular risk might be mediated through a complex interplay among a wide range of nutrients commonly found in fish,” they wrote, noting that vitamins D and B complex, essential amino acids, and trace elements could have positive effects.

Alternatively, they speculated, people who eat more fish may be displacing unhealthier foods like red meat. Greater fish consumption also could be a marker of an overall healthier diet and higher socioeconomic status, both of which are likely related to a lower risk for cerebrovascular events.

Scientists Develop Small-Scale Tractor Beam

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

It’s not exactly Star Trek yet, but scientists at New York University have worked out how to move around tiny silica spheres using beams of light.

In a paper entitled “Optical Conveyors: A Class of Active Tractor Beams,” David Ruffner and David Grier describe how they were able to pull 30 micrometer-sized silica spheres suspended in water, towards a laser source, the site reports. Check out the video above to see how the Bessel beams work.

While it’s only on a miniscule scale — we’re talking molecules, here — the discovery gets us one step closer to moving a chair a la Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Losing your cellphone can be as bad, or worse, than losing your wallet.

If someone has your cellphone they can access your apps, which may hold your bank account information, plus your communications via email, text and voicemail. They found the planet, which is barely bigger than Earth, by analyzing slight fluctuations in the movement of the star system using telescopes at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. The analysis will be published tomorrow, Oct. 17, in the journal Nature.

The planet gives a little tug to the star it’s orbiting, which the researchers can see even though it’s tiny.

When users scan the barcode on a food item, they’re taken to a screen that provides a summary of the item, including reviews and where it falls on the nutritional scale. Reading an item’s nutritional facts on the app, however, seems redundant since users can simply see those same facts on the food packaging.

Logitech K810 Keyboard Can Control Three Devices at Once

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

It’s handy to have a mobile keyboard for your tablet, but wouldn’t it be great if your phone could share the love? With Logitech‘s K810, it can — the Bluetooth keyboard can pair with up to three devices simultaneously, letting your smartphone, tablet and computer all share in its chiclet-style keys and brushed aluminum finish.

Switching between devices is as easy as a keystroke — just tap one of the first three function keys to relay the connection. The keys are tailored for Windows 8 machines, but don’t be fooled: The keyboard is compatible with PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads and even Android devices (version 3.0 “Honeycomb” or later).

Ever better, the K810 is backlit. If you’re thinking that translates into a short battery life, think again: a built-in sensor detects your fingers when they float over the keys, automatically bringing the backlight to life. It also adjusts to ambient light, dimming or brightening according to how much light is in the room — or yard.
