Your Body's Peak Time for Everything

See on Scoop.it - Health Studies Updates

A growing body of research suggests that the body clock can help pinpoint the best times of day to perform specific tasks, from solving work problems to playing racquetball.

As difficult as it may be to align schedules with the body clock, it may be worth it to try, because of significant potential health benefits. Disruption of circadian rhythms has been linked to such problems as diabetes, depression, dementia and obesity, says Steve Kay, a professor of molecular and computational biology at the University of Southern California. When the body’s master clock can synchronize functioning of all its metabolic, cardiovascular and behavioral rhythms in response to light and other natural stimuli, it “gives us an edge in daily life,” Dr. Kay says.

Therapy isn’t only for people with a diagnosis — or in crisis. Therapy is a great way to enhance your happiness (or what psychologists call “well-being”).

As Alison Thayer, LCPC, CEAP, a psychotherapist at Urban Balance, said, “We focus on eating healthy and exercising to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but we often do not apply the same principles to our mind and mental health. Consider therapy sessions to be the equivalent of providing our bodies with a nutritious meal.”

In fact, therapy is nourishing in many different ways…

Social Media Influences Less Than 1% of Online Purchases [STUDY]

See on Scoop.it - Business Updates

Ecommerce businesses should concentrate more of their efforts on traditional online marketing tactics like search and e-mail than social media.

Ecommerce businesses should concentrate more of their efforts on traditional online marketing That’s the conclusion of a Forrester study released Tuesday, which examined 77,000 online transactions made between April 1 and April 14. The study found that less than 1% of them could be traced back to social networks like Facebook or Pinterest.

Determining how web activity influences purchases is tricky; although many often credit the last touchpoint for a sale, Forrester found that half of repeat customers and a third of new customers touch multiple touchpoints prior to a purchase. As such, certain funnels, like display advertising and e-mail, may be undervalued.

Nevertheless, ecommerce websites still convert more highly than any other channel, accounting for 30% of transactions. Thus it’s smart for retailers to promote their domain names as much as possible.

Mozilla Firefox Turns 10

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

A timeline of the events that have come to define Firefox, the web’s most popular open source browser.

Mozilla’s Firefox browser is the third most popular way to navigate the web, just behind Google Chrome and Internet Explorer.

Firefox is unique among the browser titans, because it’s the only one that’s completely open source — meaning Mozilla makes all of the source code available to the public. This has led to the proliferation of add-ons, many of which are made by non-employees. They allow users to greatly customize their browser.

In addition, since Firefox’s code is published, any programmer can “look under the hood” to see what’s working — an important feature at a time when Internet security concerns are increasingly prevalent.

Is Online Education Worth It?

See on Scoop.it - Perspectives in Education

Taking classes online used to be something that was done by people who couldn’t afford to go to college, or perhaps didn’t have time. When the practice of taking classes online first started, many ‘in-person’ teachers looked down on it as an inferior way of trying to learn, because we thought we had all the answers about the right way to learn.

While we’re sure that there are still people out there who look at online education as a lame substitute for more traditional styles of learning (read: sitting in a classroom being lectured at), all signs are positive for online learning. More students are doing it, big institutions are embracing it, and quality is continually on the rise. Read on to learn more from this handy infographic (brought to you by Colorado Tech)

Regular consumption of sugary beverages linked to increased genetic risk of obesity

See on Scoop.it - Health Studies Updates

Researchers from Harvard School of Public Health have found that greater consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) is linked with a greater genetic susceptibility to high body mass index (BMI) and increased risk of obesity.

“Our study for the first time provides reproducible evidence from three prospective cohorts to show genetic and dietary factors—sugar-sweetened beverages—may mutually influence their effects on body weight and obesity risk. The findings may motivate further research on interactions between genomic variation and environmental factors regarding human health,” said Lu Qi, assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition at HSPH and senior author of the study.

North Carolina Criminalizes Cyberbullying of Teachers

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Update

In North Carolina, children and teens aren’t the only victims of bullying. On the Internet, teachers report being tormented and provoked by students.

As per a new law, cyberbullying with the “intent to intimidate or torment a school employee” is now a criminal misdemeanor. The School Violence Protection Law of 2012 that recently passed places teacher-bullying provisions in ink.

By holding students responsible for their actions online, supporters of the bill hope to curb harassment of school employees on the Internet.

One in six educators report experiencing cyberbaiting, according to a Norton survey of 2,279 teachers in 24 countries. In some instances, students attempt to provoke school employees to near-breakdown. It’s a growing phenomenon inside and outside the classroom.

The two countries’ education systems are headed in opposite directions, aiming at exactly what the other one is trying to give up.

What seems to be underappreciated in this country is how actively the Asian systems are trying to embrace the values and outcomes that we appear to be so willing to abandon: specifically, the American penchant for promoting creativity, individualism, innovation, and nonconformity. Bike Helmet Sticker Calls for Help if it Detects a Fall

See on Scoop.it - Health Studies Updates

ICEdot (In Case of Emergency) partnered with SenseTech LLC to develop a helmet-mounted impact sensor.

The innovative wireless sensor — which looks like a plain, yellow sticker — can detect motion, changes in forces and impacts that occur when the rider has fallen.

It then communicates with the ICEdot app on the user’s smartphone using Bluetooth and automatically alerts their emergency contact with a GPS coordinate of the fall and its severity.

This data is sent after a countdown clock reaches zero, so if you dropped the helmet accidentally, you can avert the emergency notification being sent using the app. The ICEdot sensor will initially be targeted towards action sports athletes, cyclists, and those who take part in snow sports, skateboarding, motocross and BMX.

Autism risk test is 70 percent accurate

See on Scoop.it - Psychology Update

This test could assist in the early detection of the condition in babies and children and help in the early management of those who become diagnosed,” says lead researcher Professor Stan Skafidas, Director of the Center for Neural Engineering at the University of Melbourne.

“It would be particularly relevant for families who have a history of autism or related conditions such as Asperger’s syndrome,” he says.

Autism affects around one in 150 births and is characterized by abnormal social interaction, impaired communication, and repetitive behaviors.

The test correctly predicted autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with more than 70 percent accuracy in people of central European descent. Ongoing validation tests are continuing including the development of accurate testing for other ethnic groups.
