New Africa: the Kenyan internet nerd reshaping a nation

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

Juliana Rotich’s groundbreaking website Ushahidi has helped ordinary Africans take control of their lives, writes Ally Carnwath…

In 2008, when political and ethnic violence broke out in Kenya after disputed elections, Rotich was trapped at home in the western city of Eldoret, where some of the worst fighting was taking place.

A blackout on live news broadcasts had left Kenyans unable to get basic information about what was going on. So Rotich and a group of friends created a website, called Ushahidi (“testimony” in Swahili), that used updates from ordinary people, via emails and text messages, and plotted these on an interactive map.

Learning is in the air

See on Scoop.it - Perspectives in Education

Learning is in the air…
A classroom in the cloud sounds like the stuff of fantasy but for students and staff at the Australian TAFE New England Institute, the concept is only weeks away from becoming reality.

For the past six months, teachers at NEI have been working on what they hope will become a learning tool of the future and could change the way students learn around the world.

Taking advantage of the opportunities afforded by access to high-speed broadband, the Cloud 9 project aims to create a ”classroom in the cloud”, encompassing at least nine different technologies to provide a collaborative, experiential and self-motivated learning environment.

Kenya ahead Nigeria as IBM sites Africa’s ICT lab in Nairobi

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

The choice of Kenya as the location for International Business Machines (IBMs) first research laboratory in Africa is raising fears that Nigeria is being left behind with regard to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development.
When IBM, the $230 billion American Information Technology (IT) and Software Company sought a spot in Africa to build its new research centre, it didn’t pick Nigeria with its 168 million people and $270 billion economy.
It chose Kenya instead, a country whose economy at $34 billion, is about the size of Lagos (Nigeria’s commercial capital), and has a population seven times smaller than Nigeria’s.

Anyone with kids, or perhaps a job where you eat at your desk, knows that food and keyboards don’t mix.

In fact, they can get pretty sticky and crumb-filled if you don’t clean them regularly. Besides using a gas duster or wiping it with an electronics-friendly cloth, there’s no easy way to thoroughly sanitize your keyboard.

Enter Logitech‘s Washable Keyboard K310, unveiled on Wednesday. It has the familiar layout of the Logitech keyboards you may already use, but this one can take a dip in water. You can rinse it in the kitchen sink or wipe it with a wet cloth. Not only can the keyboard be submerged up to 11 inches, it dries easily, too.

Cyborg America: inside the strange new world of basement body hackers

See on Scoop.it - Technology Futures

For the first few days after the surgery, it was difficult to separate out my newly implanted sense from the bits of pain and sensation created by the trauma of having the magnet jammed in my finger. Certain things were clear: microwave ovens gave off a steady field that was easy to perceive, like a pulsating wave of invisible water, or air heavy from heat coming off a fan. And other magnets, of course, were easy to identify. They lurked like landmines in everyday objects — my earbuds, my messenger bag — sending my finger ringing with a deep, sort of probing force field that shifted around in my flesh.

On a theoretical level, no one can dispute the statement that “technological advancements today have the potential to provide efficient solutions for distance teacher professional development (TPD)”, this is especially true in terms of time and scale. However, a set of questions stem from the above statement, and the main ones are: “Can the available technology ensure distance learning that provides for teacher engagement in what is considered to be one of the most complex learning processes?” And if yes, “Which of the available technology can be utilized to ensure teacher engagement in what has proven to work in teacher professional development?” And finally, “Will the utilization of this kind of technology in distance education still be efficient in terms of cost and scale?”

Luckily, small firms can find simpler ways to boost their sales efforts. Often, it’s as easy as using existing tools, such as email, in a new way, or adding a few carefully selected sales apps.

These tools can both generate and organize leads so you can turn prospects into profits.
