Final Numbers Are In: Space Jump Breaks YouTube Record

It’s official: Felix Baumgartner’s jump from the edge of space broke a record for the “live stream with the most concurrent views ever on YouTube,” according to the video-sharing website.
At peak, there were more than 8 million concurrent live streams, YouTube said in a Sunday blog post. The jump was broadcast on Red Bull’s YouTube channel.

The daredevil also broke some non-digital records, including the highest jump from a platform (128,100 feet), the longest distance freefall (119,846 feet) and the maximum vertical velocity (833.9 mph or Mach 1.24), the post added. This last distinction makes Baumgartner the first human to break the sound barrier outside of an aircraft.

However, a set of questions stem from the above statement, and the main ones are: “Can the available technology ensure distance learning that provides for teacher engagement in what is considered to be one of the most complex learning processes?” And if yes, “Which of the available technology can be utilized to ensure teacher engagement in what has proven to work in teacher professional development?” And finally, “Will the utilization of this kind of technology in distance education still be efficient in terms of cost and scale?”

Virgin Galactic's LauncherOne Aims to Make Satellite Deployment Cheaper

Virgin Galactic has introduced LauncherOne, a rocket that aims to make satellite deployment cheaper.

Virgin Galactic claims the new rocket — which travels at 80,000 mph and can circle the earth in 90 minutes — will cut the cost of deploying a satellite from the current $30 million to $40 million to $10 million. A maiden flight is expected in 2015 or 2016.

That’s the idea behind Lytro’s light field cameras. This disruptive technology is the brainchild of Dr. Ren Ng. In fact, his seminal Ph.D. research on light field technology earned the field’s top honor, the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award for best thesis in computer science and engineering, as well as Stanford University’s Arthur Samuel Award for Best Ph.D. Dissertation.
Lytro’s light field camera represents [possibly] the most significant shift in photography since the transition from film to digital in 1988. The light field fully defines how a scene appears, from the foreground to the background and everything in between. Unlike conventional cameras, which can only record a scene in two dimensions, light field cameras can capture all of the light traveling in every direction through a scene in four dimensions. A light field picture taken with a Lytro camera can be manipulated after the fact in ways not possible with editing software.
